Wildfire Burns Thousands of Acres in South Florida

News

Fire crews are working to contain a large brush fire in southern Miami-Dade County that has scorched over 3,600 acres and remains only 20% contained. The fire, which began earlier this week, has caused significant travel disruptions, including closures on Card Sound Road and intermittent blockages along U.S. 1’s 18-Mile Stretch—an essential route to the Florida Keys.

The Florida Forest Service reports that this fire is one of 16 active wildfires currently burning across the state. So far in the 2025 wildfire season, 45 fires have burned nearly 4,000 acres in Florida.

Dry weather and high pressure continue to create ideal conditions for wildfire growth, with no rain in the forecast. As a result, a NEXT Weather Alert has been issued due to potential air quality concerns in southern Miami-Dade and the Upper Keys caused by smoke, especially after sunset.

Over 15 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units, along with state and air support, are involved in firefighting efforts. Water drops and on-the-ground containment are ongoing, but officials warn the fire could burn for several more days.

Drivers in the affected areas are advised to keep their windows closed and air conditioning on recirculate mode to minimize smoke exposure while traveling.
